Jeff Jones is an American-Canadian bassist and vocalist whose career spans decades of rock history. Born in Chicago in 1953 and raised in Toronto, Jones was immersed in music from an early age, thanks to his jazz pianist father and early encounters with legends like Oscar Peterson.
In 1968, Jones became the original bassist and lead vocalist for Rush, performing alongside Alex Lifeson and John Rutsey. Though his time with the band was brief, it marked the beginning of a storied career. He later gained fame with Ocean, whose hit “Put Your Hand in the Hand” became a million-selling single.
Jones joined Red Rider in the late 1970s, contributing to their iconic track “Lunatic Fringe.” He continues to perform with Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, and is also a member of The Carpet Frogs, backing Burton Cummings. His bass work has graced hits like Bernie LaBarge’s “Dream Away” and countless other projects.
In recent years, Jones released the single “Naked in the Church” with Roar, followed by “Velvet Sky” in 2024—a lush, melodic track featuring Gerry Finn. His enduring creativity and versatility have made him a cornerstone of the Canadian music scene.
